The Tooth

Yesterday was a big day in our house.  Oldest Daughter lost her first tooth!!  Now, I certainly do not remember the loss of my first tooth, but I can imagine that I did not even come close to the amount of excitement that she felt at this.  At one point, she even commented that she thought she would cry from the happiness of losing her tooth (and yes, she is also quite dramatic).

A few weeks ago, Oldest Daughter and I went to the dentist for her normal six month cleaning.  When he informed us she had a loose tooth, neither one of us had known it was there.  He did mention that the tooth was still about a month away from coming out.  Wrong.  That tooth was wiggled day and night.  And when it finally came out, it was ready.  No blood.  No pain.  Just elation on the part of a little girl.

When Brother had seen the loose tooth for the first time, he mentioned to Oldest Daughter that she was a lucky girl because she was close to getting money from the Tooth Fairy.  And she answered "yeah and maybe some coins too!!"  Yep, my girl is a cheap date!

We put the tooth in a plastic bag (it was the teeniest, tiniest tooth!) and hid it under her pillow to be replaced with four quarters.  The Tooth Fairy went the extra step in sprinkling glitter under the pillow and on the floor, to prove, of course, that she was really there.  The excitement continued this morning.  And I am sure that every single person that sees her today will get a flash of her holey smile.

There was a bit of discussion between Handy Hubby and myself.  I have realised, over the years, that I am not a sentimental person.  I did not feel it necessary to save a bit of either girls' hair when they had their first haircut.  I did not save the umbilical cord.  And now, I do not feel if necessary to save their first teeth.  He did not have the same thoughts.  But that Tooth Fairy wandered away with the tooth, so there is no tellings where it is now....JCMT
