The 2014 Word of the Year
As a blogger, there is one end of year activity I like to participate in. Well, this is my first year as a blogger, but as a reader of many other blogs, I have participated in this activity over the last few years. So, really, this is my first year participating as a blogger, but my third year in general. Did you follow that? I'm not sure I did.
Anyways, the new year is almost upon us and it is time to pick a new word of the year. Let me give you a bit of background on this. I don't know about you, but I do not make, nor believe in, resolutions. They, in theory, are great. You make a list of improvements you would like to make. Some of you out there that have great willpower, can hold out most, or some, of the year. Me, a few days. Then a few more days of guilt for my lack of willpower. Then, it's forgotten until next year.
The Word of the Year is a bit of a different take on resolutions. You pick a word that you would like to help define your upcoming year. For example, my 2013 Word of the Year was 'Present'. Not like presents at my birthday, anniversary or Christmas. Or even my half birthday! 'Present' was the word that helped me to stay involved in my life, minute by minute, detail by detail. It helped remind me that I couldn't just check out for whole sections of it if my life at the moment wasn't to my liking. This word helped me to stay focused on the little things that were happening all around me, allowing me to not miss any defining moments. And as the mother of small children, who is truly starting to understand not wasting a moment of the precious time I have with them as small ones, 'Present' helped to remind me of that daily.
The 2014 Word of the Day should be one that means something to you. That will help you focus on what is important in your life. It can be a simple word, or a big $5 word, whatever helps you in some area of your life throughout the year. Tell your friends and loved ones about this activity, even tell them your word. That can help you stay accountable to your new quest. Post the word around your house, in places you know you will always see it. Give this word the importance in your life it deserves.
My 2014 Word of the Year is 'Treasure'. It feels very similar in reasoning, for me, that 'Present' felt. It is to remind me to treasure the friends and family that figure strongly in my life. It will remind me to treasure the small things - good or bad. It will remind me that I need to treasure the million of times daily I hear the Little Ones say my name, because some time in my future I will be lucky to hear it just once a day. It will remind me that I need to treasure the bear hugs from Handy Hubby. I don't know what the future will be bringing my way, so I don't want to take those hugs for granted. It will help me to smile every time I hear the phone ringing, knowing it is Brother for the fourteenth time that day, calling just to say 'hey'. Simple things need to be treasured, and those are the easiest to overlook.
I would love to hear what your 2014 Word of the Day is. Shoot me your word pick and the reason why you chose it in the comment section at the end of this blog. Maybe I can even help keep you accountable.....JCMT
